Started off slowly with little expectation but as the morning went on we ended up having done nice riding through the country side
At Colchester we had a very forgettable stop at Starbucks but going uphill we saw Roman ruins and what is a gate, the largest Roman gate in Britain…very cool
Alas the main road reared it ugly head again and we found some side roads to take us onwards.
Stumbled upon a really nice country pub, the Hound and the Hares, where we had an excellent Sunday lunch and spoke to some locals
It seems to be dating back to 1660!
Then it was onwards and found a Tudor palace dating from 1520, Layer Marney Tower…
Kept going and decided to go via Maldon but once there we realised it was pretty ordinary
Looked for suitable campsites but nothing came up so we found a flat 20 km away in Chelmsford….nice to have a proper bed….
All in all a very nice day of riding in 30 degree sun
It is sooo dry…looks really parched and just like Oz in summer except where we can water there seems to be no such option here.
They have not had good rains for 2 months!!!!! Incredible….
